The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has unveiled a formidable 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men's Under-19 World Cup, setting the stage for a thrilling campaign. The tournament will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia in 2026.
Leadership and Core Batting Strength
In a significant announcement made on Saturday, the board appointed Azizul Hakim as the team captain, with Zawad Abrar named his vice-captain. The selection committee placed a strong emphasis on experience and current form, rewarding consistent performers from the youth circuit.
Both Hakim and Abrar have been pillars of the batting lineup since the last edition of the tournament, amassing over 1,000 runs each in Youth ODIs. They will be complemented by the reliable Kalam Siddiki, who has compiled 857 runs in the same period and is known for his ability to build innings.
Pace Attack and Group Stage Challenge
Recognizing the conditions in Zimbabwe, which often favor seam bowling, Bangladesh has invested in a potent pace attack. The fast bowling duties will be spearheaded by Iqbal Hossain (45 wickets) and Al Fahad (43 wickets), both of whom have impressive records since the previous World Cup.
The team finds itself in a highly competitive Group B, alongside cricketing heavyweights India and New Zealand, as well as the USA. Their campaign kicks off with a high-voltage clash against India on January 17. With the top three teams from each group advancing to the Super Six stage, every match from the start will be crucial.
Squad Depth and Tournament Structure
Demonstrating thorough preparation, the BCB has also named eight standby players to cover for any potential injuries during the event. This depth highlights the board's intent to leave no stone unturned.
The 2026 Under-19 World Cup will feature 16 national teams competing across 41 matches before the grand finale. Bangladesh, with its blend of experienced youth campaigners and promising talent, will aim to navigate the tough group and make a deep run in the tournament.
