The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold a high-level review of the national team's recent performances following a disastrous tour of England and Ireland. The review, expected to take place next week, will assess the team's batting failures and the overall strategy, with sources indicating that changes in the coaching setup are on the cards.
Review Meeting Called
According to BCCI insiders, the review meeting will be chaired by BCCI President and Secretary, along with senior officials from the Cricket Advisory Committee. The meeting was convened after the team lost the Test series in England 2-1 and was whitewashed 2-0 in the T20I series in Ireland. India managed only one half-century across the two T20Is, highlighting the batting woes.
"We are extremely disappointed with the results and will evaluate all aspects, including team selection and coaching methodology," a senior BCCI official told reporters on condition of anonymity. The official added that no decision has been made yet, but all options are open.
Poor Batting Displays
India's batting collapse in England was a major concern. In the first Test at Lord's, the team was bowled out for 187 in the first innings, eventually losing by an innings. The batting average for the series was a mere 28.5, with only one century scored by the visiting team. The middle order particularly struggled, with No. 3 and No. 5 positions averaging under 20.
The Ireland T20Is were no better, with India managing just 89 and 110 in the two matches. The lack of intent and poor shot selection have been criticized by former players and experts.
Coaching Staff Under Scrutiny
Head coach Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour, and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey are all under scrutiny. Sources indicate that the review will focus on the coaching staff's ability to prepare the team for overseas conditions. Dravid's contract runs until the end of the year, but poor results may force an early change.
"The coach's role is to ensure players are mentally and technically ready. The repeated failures suggest something is amiss," the official said. Reports suggest that the BCCI may approach foreign coaches for a fresh perspective.
Possible Changes
Among the options being discussed is the appointment of a separate Test and limited-overs coach, similar to the strategy adopted by England. Another possibility is the introduction of a sports psychologist and a data analyst to support the team. The selection committee may also see changes, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar's position reportedly on the line.
"We want to give the team every chance to succeed. If that means making tough decisions, we will not hesitate," the official added. The BCCI is expected to announce the outcome of the review within a week.
The review comes ahead of a crucial home season against Australia and South Africa, making it imperative to address the issues quickly.
