Boris Becker backs Jurgen Klopp as Germany coach

German tennis legend Boris Becker has publicly backed Jurgen Klopp as the ideal candidate to become Germany's next head coach, praising his experience, international success, and deep understanding of the game. In a post on X, Becker highlighted Klopp's ability to reignite enthusiasm around the national team and restore the sense of excitement and unity that German sport has lacked in recent years.

"Jurgen Klopp is the absolute ideal choice for the job as national team coach! He brings life experience & success & internationality & the smell of the dugout to the table! He will once again spark a positive national euphoria....which we haven't had in sports for a long time!" Becker wrote.

Klopp in Talks with DFB

Klopp has confirmed he is in discussions with the German Football Association (DFB) about becoming Germany's next head coach. However, any potential appointment depends on talks with his current employer, Red Bull, where he serves as Head of Global Soccer. Klopp previously managed Borussia Dortmund from 2008 to 2015 and Liverpool from 2015 to 2024, achieving significant success at both clubs.

Nagelsmann Steps Down After World Cup Exit

Julian Nagelsmann resigned as Germany's head coach following the team's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Germany was eliminated by Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the round of 32, marking the first time Germany lost a World Cup match on penalties. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Germany's Jonathan Tah scoring in the 101st minute, but Paraguay equalized and won the shootout.

Nagelsmann said Germany deserves the "opportunity for a true new start" after the "disappointing performance" at the tournament. The DFB confirmed his resignation on Friday, four days after the elimination, stating that Nagelsmann had requested to be relieved of his duties in a confidential discussion the day before. The DFB added that the leadership will now seek talks with Klopp.

DFB Statement on Nagelsmann Resignation

"Julian Nagelsmann had already asked the federation leadership in a confidential discussion the day before to be released from his duties following Germany's disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This request has now been granted by the corporate representatives and the supervisory board," the DFB said on Friday.

Germany's elimination in the round of 32 was a major shock, as the team had high hopes for the tournament. The search for a new head coach now begins, with Klopp emerging as the frontrunner following Becker's endorsement and the DFB's confirmation of talks.
