Bus Crash Kills 1, Injures 18 on Trichy-Chennai Highway

A tragic road accident occurred on the Trichy-Chennai National Highway near Madurantakam in Chengalpet district on Thursday, resulting in the death of a 48-year-old passenger and injuries to 18 others. The incident took place when a private sleeper coach bus, carrying 36 passengers and traveling from Karur to Chennai, collided with a borewell tractor.

Details of the Accident

According to police reports, the bus was speeding while crossing Arappedu village. The tractor ahead suddenly applied brakes to allow a biker to cross the road, leading to the collision. The bus veered off the road and overturned into a roadside ditch. Local residents and motorists quickly responded, breaking the vehicle's door to rescue trapped passengers.

Casualties and Injuries

The deceased was identified as Chellamuthu, 48, a resident of Karur, who died on the spot. His body was sent to Chengalpet Government Hospital for postmortem examination. Eighteen injured passengers were admitted to Chengalpet district government hospital and Madurantakam Government Hospital. The remaining passengers, who sustained minor or no injuries, continued their journey on another bus.

Traffic Disruption and Investigation

The accident caused a significant traffic jam on the highway for nearly an hour during the early morning. Acharapakkam police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the crash. Further details are awaited as the inquiry proceeds.
