France captain Kylian Mbappe reached 20 World Cup goals across three tournaments, moving within one of Lionel Messi's all-time record of 21, as France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Boston on Thursday. Mbappe's eighth goal of the tournament also tied him with Argentina's Messi at the top of the Golden Boot race.
Mbappe's milestone and France's victory
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 60th minute, curling a brilliant finish from inside the box past Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou after a clever assist from Desire Doue. Ousmane Dembele later doubled the lead to secure France's place in the semifinals for the third consecutive World Cup.
The goal was Mbappe's 20th in World Cups, spanning the 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions. He also became the first player in France's history to be directly involved in 100 international goals, achieving the milestone with 64 goals and 36 assists for Les Bleus.
Golden Boot race heats up
Mbappe's eighth goal of the 2026 World Cup sees him share the top spot in the Golden Boot standings with Lionel Messi, who also has eight goals in the tournament. The race remains tight as both players continue to feature in the knockout stages.
According to tournament statistics, Mbappe's 20 World Cup goals place him second on the all-time list behind Messi's 21, with the French captain now just one goal shy of equalling the record.
France's path to the semifinals
France grew into the contest after a tight first half. Mbappe came close to breaking the deadlock and also missed a penalty opportunity, leaving the score level at half-time. The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when Mbappe produced a moment of brilliance to put France ahead.
The result ends Morocco's impressive run after another historic World Cup campaign, where they became the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals. France now advance to face either Spain or Belgium in the semifinals.
Historic achievement for Mbappe
Mbappe's 20 World Cup goals in just three tournaments underline his extraordinary consistency on the global stage. He scored four goals in 2018, eight in 2022, and eight so far in 2026. His direct involvement in 100 international goals for France further cements his status as one of the country's greatest ever players.
France will look to continue their title defence in the semifinals, with Mbappe leading the charge for a third consecutive final appearance.
