India face Australia in must-win Women's T20 World Cup clash

India face a do-or-die clash against six-time champions Australia in the Women's T20 World Cup Group A on Sunday, needing a win to keep their semifinal hopes alive. The match at Old Trafford, Manchester, starts at 7:00 PM IST.

Group A standings and qualification scenarios

Australia lead the group with eight points from four matches and a net run rate of 4.724. India and South Africa are tied on six points each, but India have a superior net run rate of 2.268 compared to South Africa's 0.734. Bangladesh have four points. The day's two matches will decide the semifinalists: South Africa face Bangladesh at Lord's before India take on Australia.

If South Africa beat Bangladesh as expected, India must defeat Australia to qualify. A loss would eliminate the reigning ODI world champions. Australia can afford a defeat and still progress due to their higher points and net run rate. However, an unlikely Bangladesh win would ease India's path, allowing them to qualify even with a loss if their net run rate stays above South Africa's.

India's batting and fielding woes

India's campaign has been marred by inconsistent batting and poor fielding. Openers Smriti Mandhana (167 runs) and Shafali Verma (145) have found form, but the middle order has struggled: captain Harmanpreet Kaur has scored only 85 runs and Jemimah Rodrigues 58. In the last two matches, India dropped six catches, including four against Bangladesh in a five-wicket win and two against South Africa in a loss. Radha Yadav, usually a reliable fielder, dropped three of those six catches.

Head coach Amol Muzumdar and Harmanpreet know that such errors could be fatal against Australia, who are unbeaten in the tournament. India's bowling has relied heavily on left-arm spinner Shree Charani, who has taken 12 wickets in four matches, but the rest of the attack has not clicked together.

Australia's form and Litchfield return

Australia are likely to welcome back Phoebe Litchfield, who missed three games due to a calf injury. She enjoys batting against India and will bolster a strong lineup. Captain Sophie Molineux leads a side that has been dominant, with Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner, and Ellyse Perry among the key players.

India will draw inspiration from their ODI World Cup semifinal victory over Australia, where Jemimah Rodrigues played a match-winning innings. However, replicating that performance in T20 format will require a complete team effort.
