India Women's T20 Team Loses Series 4-1 to South Africa, Concerns Ahead of World Cup
India Women Lose T20 Series 4-1 to South Africa

MUMBAI: The India women's cricket team, current world champions in the 50-over format, face significant challenges in T20 cricket after a disappointing series loss to South Africa. On Monday in Benoni, India lost the fifth and final T20I by 23 runs, failing to chase down a target of 156 and finishing at 132 for eight in 20 overs. This defeat resulted in a 4-1 series loss, a concerning outcome ahead of the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup in England, scheduled to start on June 12.

Worryingly, South Africa are placed alongside India in Group A of the World Cup, which also includes defending champions Australia, Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Pakistan. Despite the series result, head coach Amol Muzumdar emphasized the positives while acknowledging disappointment. "I think it's been a fantastic series, fought really well. It was a competitive series. We were expecting it right from the start and it's been fantastic to come here in South Africa. Obviously, the result hasn't gone our way. We've been a little disappointed with the 4-1 result, but we have got a lot of learnings out of the series," Muzumdar said after the match.

Key Concerns Identified

Muzumdar pointed out two primary areas of concern: the team's inability to take wickets during the Powerplay overs and their batting finishes in the first two matches. India lost the third game by nine wickets despite posting a competitive 192 for four. However, he noted that these issues were addressed in the later matches. "I think initially, in the powerplay (overs), we weren't able to pick up wickets, that was one area of concern for us and also the finishing with the bat, but we addressed those things in the last three games," the Mumbaikar stated.

Experimentation and Debuts

With an eye on the T20 World Cup, India experimented with the squad, resting vice-captain Smriti Mandhana for the last two matches. Youngster Anushka Sharma from Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat Giants was given opportunities, scoring 72 runs in three matches at an average of 24.00 in her debut series. Additionally, pacer Kashvee Gautam made her T20I debut but struggled, conceding 87 runs and taking only one wicket in eight overs across three matches, with an average of 87.00 and an economy rate of 8.87.

Laura Wolvaardt's Dominance

A major factor in India's defeat was the exceptional form of South African captain Laura Wolvaardt, who amassed 330 runs in five matches at an average of 82.50 and a strike rate of 168.36, including three half-centuries and a century. Her scores were 51, 54, 115, 18, and 92 not out. Muzumdar praised her, saying, "I think credit to South Africa and especially to Laura Wolvaardt for the way she batted. She batted beautifully in this series."

Positives for India

Muzumdar highlighted several positives, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur's fine form. The 37-year-old was India's top run-scorer with 169 runs in five matches at an average of 42.25, including one half-century. He also praised wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh for rediscovering her touch in the last two matches, scoring 34 not out off 18 balls and 25 not out off 15 balls after earlier low scores. All-rounder Deepti Sharma, after initial struggles, delivered a match-winning performance in the fourth T20I at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, scoring 36 not out off 26 balls and taking five wickets for 19 runs in four overs with her off-spin.

"I think to start with, Harman's form has been fantastic. She's batting well-her work ethics, as I've said before as well, has been spot-on. Richa coming good in the last couple of games is a big positive for us. Deepti coming back into form in the fourth game.. yeah, I think a lot of positives, a lot of learnings from this series and also the camp prior to this series have been a lot of hard work for the girls. So I guess we've learned a lot in this month of April. I know the result hasn't gone our way but I'm sure a lot of learnings and a lot of takeaways for us from this series," the India women's cricket team coach concluded.
