The Indian cricket team has launched a new 'Best Attitude Award' to recognise players who display exemplary spirit and effort on the field. The first recipient of the award was all-rounder Shivam Dube, following India's commanding win in the opening T20I against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club.
Award Introduced to Boost Team Morale
According to team sources, the award is part of a broader initiative by the coaching staff, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, to emphasise attitude and energy over individual statistics. The award is decided by the team management based on inputs from players and support staff after each match. Dube was praised for his relentless energy in the field, taking two sharp catches and effecting a run-out, besides scoring 29 runs off 18 balls.
India Dominate First T20I
India posted 182 for 8 in their 20 overs, with Shubman Gill top-scoring with 58 off 51 balls. In reply, Zimbabwe were restricted to 118 for 9, giving India a 64-run victory. The win was set up by a disciplined bowling performance, with Washington Sundar taking three wickets. Dube's all-round contribution earned him the Player of the Match award as well.
Positive Response from Players
"This award is about recognising the little things that don't always show up on the scoreboard," said Gambhir. "Shivam's attitude in the field lifted the entire team. We want to build a culture where effort is celebrated." Dube, speaking after the match, said, "It's a great honour. This award motivates me to keep giving my best for the team."
Impact on Team Culture
The introduction of the award marks a shift in the team's focus towards process-oriented performance. The management plans to continue the award throughout the series and possibly beyond. The next T20I is scheduled for 26 July in Harare, and the team hopes to maintain the same positive energy.
