Irfan Pathan Backs Mohammed Shami, Questions ODI Snub After 200 Overs
Irfan Pathan questions Shami's ODI squad omission

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has publicly voiced his support for veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami, expressing bewilderment over the pacer's continued exclusion from the national team. This comes after Shami was left out of India's squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, despite his notable performances in domestic cricket.

Pathan's Strong Defense of a Seasoned Campaigner

Irfan Pathan, speaking on his YouTube channel, highlighted Shami's immense contribution to Indian cricket as a key reason for his support. "He's not someone who came yesterday, played a few matches and left," Pathan stated. He emphasized the bowler's staggering tally of 450-500 international wickets, arguing that such a proven match-winner deserves clearer communication regarding his future.

Pathan directly addressed the recurring questions about Shami's fitness, which have often been cited around his selection. He pointed to the significant workload Shami has shouldered since returning from injury. "Shami has already bowled 200 overs. After bowling 200 overs, if fitness is the question, it has already been demonstrated," Pathan asserted, suggesting the pacer has done enough to prove his physical readiness.

A Series of Setbacks and the IPL Route

The omission from the New Zealand ODIs is the latest in a string of disappointments for the 35-year-old speedster. Shami has not played for India since the Champions Trophy-winning campaign in 2025. Despite recovering from injury and playing competitively, he has been overlooked for recent Test series against England, West Indies, and South Africa, as well as the ODI series against Australia.

Pathan advised Shami to focus on the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) as the perfect platform to force his way back into contention. "If I were him, I would go and play the IPL and create havoc. I would take the new ball and perform at such a level," he said. Pathan believes that a strong performance in the globally-watched IPL would make him impossible to ignore for the selectors.

The Road Ahead for Shami

Pathan concluded with a plea to the national selectors, urging them not to close the door on a bowler of Shami's calibre. "Domestic cricket performances are discussed, but when the IPL comes, and you show your old rhythm and fitness, then no one can ignore you... I believe his doors should not be closed," he added.

Meanwhile, the Indian team is set to host New Zealand for a three-match ODI series starting January 11, which will be followed by a five-match T20I series. The squad announced on Saturday saw the return of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, but the absence of Mohammed Shami remained the most debated point among fans and experts alike.
