Jasprit Bumrah has been included in India's 15-member ODI squad for the three-match series against England, beginning July 14, marking his first 50-over appearance since the 2023 World Cup final. The pace spearhead, rested for the recent Afghanistan series under workload management, will lead India's bowling attack in English conditions.
Bumrah's return after extended absence
Since India's defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, the 32-year-old has missed eight ODI assignments, highlighting the BCCI's cautious approach to managing his workload. He was absent from ODI series in South Africa and Sri Lanka in 2023-24 and 2024 respectively, as well as the home series against England, the 2025 Champions Trophy, tours of Australia, and home contests against South Africa and New Zealand. The Afghanistan series earlier this month was also skipped.
The decision to carefully manage Bumrah's workload stems from his history of back injuries and the need to preserve him for major tournaments and multi-format commitments. The fast bowler has often been rested from bilateral assignments to ensure fitness for marquee events.
Squad composition and leadership
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad on Sunday. Shubman Gill will captain the side, with Shreyas Iyer serving as vice-captain. Senior batter Virat Kohli also returns to the squad, though his participation is subject to fitness clearance after a hamstring injury sustained during IPL 2026.
India's full ODI squad for the England tour includes: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli*, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Gurnoor Brar. Impact and significance
With the next ODI World Cup cycle accelerating, Bumrah's availability for the England series is a significant boost for India. His experience and ability to strike in all phases of the innings will be crucial in unfamiliar English conditions. The series also provides an opportunity for the team to build momentum under new captain Shubman Gill.
