Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has rejoined the national team at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after briefly leaving to attend the birth of his first child. The 24-year-old Manchester City player received a warm welcome from teammates upon his return to the squad's base in Washington on Wednesday.
Doku's Return and Teammates' Reaction
The Belgian Football Association posted a video on Instagram showing players embracing Doku. The caption read, "Back in camp after the most important assist of his life." Doku and his wife Shireen welcomed a baby boy named Praise on Monday. The decision to temporarily leave the World Cup camp sparked debate but was widely supported by teammates and fans.
On Instagram, Doku described the birth as life-changing: "Welcoming my son into the world is one of the greatest blessings God has ever given me. Now it's time to get back to football and represent my country on the biggest stage."
Belgium's World Cup Campaign So Far
According to Reuters, Doku missed Belgium's goalless draw against Iran due to illness after featuring in the opening Group G match, a 1-1 draw with Egypt. Belgium currently sits third in the group ahead of Friday's decisive clash against New Zealand in Vancouver. A victory would secure their place in the knockout rounds.
Coach Rudi Garcia must decide whether to restore Doku to the starting lineup. The winger could replace Alexis Saelemaekers on the flank, though Dodi Lukebakio is also an option. Garcia is expected to retain key attackers Kevin De Bruyne, Leandro Trossard, and Romelu Lukaku.
Defensive Changes and Team Outlook
Garcia will be forced into at least one defensive change after centre-back Nathan Ngoy was sent off in the second half against Iran. Arthur Theate is the leading candidate to replace him, while Timothy Castagne could return at full-back.
With Doku back in camp and Belgium's World Cup hopes hanging in the balance, Garcia has received a timely boost ahead of one of the team's most important matches of the tournament.
