Rahul Gandhi Demands Maximum Penalty in Bonded Labour Case
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday demanded the harshest possible punishment for those responsible for a bonded labour case in Uttar Pradesh, describing the incident as an "assault on human dignity." The case involves the rescue of several labourers from a brick kiln in the state's Baghpat district, where they were allegedly forced to work under inhumane conditions.
Details of the Rescue Operation
According to reports, a team of officials from the district administration and labour department conducted a raid on the brick kiln on Tuesday, freeing 12 labourers, including women and children. The victims were reportedly from Bihar and had been lured with promises of good wages but were instead held captive and forced to work without payment. The labourers were found living in squalid conditions, with little food or water.
District Magistrate of Baghpat, Jitendra Pratap Singh, confirmed the rescue and stated that a case has been registered under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, and the Indian Penal Code. The owner of the brick kiln has been arrested, and further investigations are underway.
Gandhi's Strong Reaction
Taking to social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, "The bonded labour case in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, is an assault on human dignity. The harshest punishment must be given to the culprits. The Congress party stands with the victims and demands justice for them." He also tagged the Uttar Pradesh Police and the state government in his post, urging swift action.
The Congress leader's statement comes amid ongoing criticism of the Uttar Pradesh government's handling of labour rights issues. The state has seen several similar cases in recent years, with activists alleging that bonded labour remains rampant in parts of the region despite laws prohibiting it.
Government Response and Legal Action
Uttar Pradesh Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar responded to the incident, saying that the state government is committed to eradicating bonded labour and that strict action will be taken against offenders. "We have zero tolerance for such practices. The rescued labourers will be provided with compensation and rehabilitation as per government norms," he said.
The rescued individuals have been placed in a shelter home and are being provided with medical care and counseling. Officials are also working to trace their families and facilitate their return to their hometowns. The case has been transferred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a thorough probe.
Broader Context of Bonded Labour in India
Bonded labour, a form of modern slavery, remains a persistent issue in India despite being outlawed for decades. According to the Global Slavery Index 2023, an estimated 8 million people in India are living in conditions of modern slavery, with bonded labour being a significant component. The practice is most prevalent in agriculture, brick kilns, and textile industries, often affecting migrant workers from marginalized communities.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act and better implementation of rehabilitation schemes for victims. The Supreme Court has also issued guidelines for the identification and release of bonded labourers, but implementation remains uneven across states.
Political Reactions and Calls for Justice
The incident has sparked political reactions, with opposition parties accusing the Uttar Pradesh government of failing to protect the rights of vulnerable workers. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also condemned the incident, saying, "Such inhuman practices should be dealt with severely. The government must ensure that no one is subjected to such exploitation."
Meanwhile, the Congress party has announced that it will raise the issue in Parliament and demand a comprehensive policy to address bonded labour. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said, "This is not an isolated incident. We need a national action plan to end bonded labour and provide justice to victims."
