Former Sri Lanka Star Compares Abhishek Sharma to Peak Chris Gayle

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Chamara Kapugedera has made a striking comparison, stating that India's recent T20 success has been fundamentally built around opener Abhishek Sharma, whose impact at the top of the order he likens to that of Chris Gayle during his most dominant years.

Statistical Dominance and Match-Winning Role

Over the past year in T20 Internationals, Abhishek Sharma has compiled an impressive record, scoring at a remarkable strike rate exceeding 170 while maintaining an average in the mid-30s, punctuated by several crucial half-centuries. His scoring rate during the Powerplay overs has ranked among the highest for Indian openers, a critical factor that has enabled India to accumulate runs rapidly early in the innings and significantly alleviate pressure on the middle-order batsmen.

"India's success in the last one year has mainly depended on Abhishek Sharma, the star, because the way he batted the past year, I think that's phenomenal," Kapugedera emphasized in an interview quoted by news agency PTI. "I haven't seen anyone doing that except for Chris Gayle when we were starting. I don't think anyone can replace Abhishek Sharma at the moment in the Indian team."

Comparison with Sanju Samson and Strategic Advantage

Kapugedera, who represented Sri Lanka across all three formats with over 100 ODIs and 43 T20Is to his name, also drew a comparison between Abhishek Sharma and fellow Indian batsman Sanju Samson. He elaborated that Abhishek's unique scoring pattern provides India with exceptional strategic flexibility.

"Yes, Sanju Samson is a great player. We have seen him scoring centuries, but the way Abhishek scores runs, it gives India so much freedom to play around him or do whatever they want actually in the middle overs," Kapugedera explained. "So, what Abhishek gives is important to India going forward in this T20 World Cup campaign, especially for getting into the final."

Previewing the India-Pakistan World Cup Clash

Looking ahead to the highly anticipated India-Pakistan encounter in the T20 World Cup, Kapugedera offered his analysis, suggesting that Pakistan does not hold a clear advantage despite playing all their matches at the venue. He provided detailed insights into the pitch conditions at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium.

"There's no advantage for Pakistan in the game here as the conditions in Colombo may not necessarily offer steep bounce. Unlike the SSC (Sinhala Sports Club) surface, known for sponge bounce and carry, the Premadasa wicket is generally lower and slower, often gripping as the game progresses," Kapugedera opined.

He concluded with a prediction for the marquee match: "I think going into the match, India will be the favourites, but the way Pakistan is playing, it's going to be a very close game."

This analysis from an experienced international cricketer underscores the pivotal role Abhishek Sharma is playing in India's T20 setup, drawing historic parallels while setting the stage for a thrilling World Cup showdown between two arch-rivals.
