Karnataka Cricket Legends Immortalized at Chinnaswamy Stadium Golden Jubilee
In a heartfelt ceremony held in Bengaluru, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) belatedly commemorated the golden jubilee of the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which originally fell on November 22, 2024. The event served as a tribute to the stadium's enduring legacy as a cradle for cricketing dreams, where generations of players have honed their skills and aspirations.
Honoring the Icons: Stands Named After Legends
During the celebrations, three of Karnataka's most revered cricketers were honored with permanent recognitions. The northern end of the stadium was formally christened the Rahul Dravid End, while the pavilion end was named the Anil Kumble End. Additionally, in a significant move acknowledging women's cricket, the B Lower Stand was named after Shantha Rangaswamy, fulfilling a long-standing demand from cricket enthusiasts. Notably, nearly five decades ago, Shantha made history by hitting the first six by a woman at this very stand, marking a pioneering moment in the sport.
Recognition for Administrators and Reflections from Legends
The ceremony also paid homage to two pioneering administrators: the late C Nagaraj and Capt. Dr K Thimmappaiah, whose names were etched on the M3 and M4 stands, respectively. This recognition comes after ten stands were named after former Karnataka male stars earlier in 2024, highlighting a broader effort to celebrate contributions across genders.
An elated Shantha Rangaswamy expressed her gratitude, stating, "I'm very grateful to everyone who supported me in my journey. Having a stand named after me at my home ground is the ultimate recognition. I am humbled."
Anil Kumble, reflecting on the honors, remarked, "To see the stands named after so many of our legends, some who I had the privilege of playing with and others who set the tone and example for us to follow at KSCA, is wonderful. It's truly special that all the contributions have been recognised and are now permanently etched in the stadium." He emphasized the pride of representing Karnataka, noting that playing for the state always held profound meaning, regardless of international achievements.
Personal Memories and Inspirational Messages
Rahul Dravid shared a poignant memory of his father, Sharad Dravid, who introduced him to cricket at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. "My father loved the game, and he was instrumental in creating that love for the sport that I have. He brought me here to so many games, not only the Test matches, but to the Ranji Trophy as well. I think he would be so proud today to know that his son has an end named after him. What makes me even more proud is that I'm sharing this occasion and this honour with some people whom I truly admire and respect," Dravid said.
Kumble left an inspirational message for future generations, recounting his own journey. "Throughout my career, no one was sure how to classify me. Some called me a medium-pacer, some others referred to me as an inswing bowler, and those who called me a leg-spinner dismissed me as someone who couldn't turn the ball. All this made me more determined. I hope that when an ambitious young boy or girl, who aspires to play for the state or the country, comes into the stadium and sees my name, they can take heart from the fact that if you are committed and sincere to your craft, there are no heights that cannot be scaled," said the genial former cricketer, who boasts 619 Test and 337 ODI wickets.

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium has been a cornerstone of Indian cricket, serving as a training ground and home venue for stalwarts like Kumble, Dravid, and Rangaswamy, all of whom have led both Karnataka and India. As Kumble aptly summarized, "From learning to compete to learning to lead, everything began here." This golden jubilee celebration not only honors past achievements but also inspires future cricketers to dream big and strive for excellence in the sport.
