Matt Henry delivered a devastating spell on the final morning of the second Test, taking all five wickets to fall as England collapsed and New Zealand secured a comprehensive victory. The win levels the three-match series at 1-1 with one Test to play.
Henry Strikes Early
Henry began the day by removing Joe Root lbw for 77 with the first ball of his second over. Root had added just two runs to his overnight score before falling to a delivery that nipped back and struck him on the pads. The dismissal sparked a collapse that saw England lose their remaining five wickets for just 48 runs.
The New Zealand paceman finished with figures of 5 for 84 in the innings, his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Tim Southee and Neil Wagner provided excellent support from the other end, maintaining pressure that forced England into mistakes.
England's Batting Woes
England's batting lineup crumbled under the pressure of chasing a challenging target. After Root's departure, Ben Stokes was caught behind off Henry for 12, and Ollie Pope fell for a duck. The lower order offered little resistance, with Henry mopping up the tail to end the match before lunch on the final day.
New Zealand had set England a target of 298 after declaring their second innings at 284 for 6. Captain Kane Williamson top-scored with 112, his 24th Test century, while Devon Conway contributed a solid 68.
Series Tied
The victory was New Zealand's first in England since 1999 and sets up a thrilling decider at Headingley. "It's a special win for this group," said Williamson. "Matt was outstanding this morning, but the whole team showed great character to bounce back after the first Test."
England captain Ben Stokes acknowledged his team's batting failure. "We didn't bat well enough in the second innings. Full credit to New Zealand, they bowled well and deserved the win."
The final Test begins on July 1, with both teams vying for series victory.
