A driver in Nagpur has been charged under the Anti-narcotics Law and the Motor Vehicles Act after testing positive for marijuana during a surprise check conducted by the city police as part of the 'Operation U-Turn' campaign. The incident occurred on Saturday when the anti-narcotics squad set up a checkpoint on Wardha Road, utilizing advanced on-the-spot drug testing kits to screen suspicious vehicles.
Details of the Operation
During the drive, officers stopped a vehicle and tested the driver, whose sample returned positive for marijuana. The man was immediately taken into custody and is currently being interrogated at the Sonegaon Police Station. Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal emphasized the effectiveness of modern drug detection kits, stating, 'With modern drug detection kits, officers can now identify narcotics instantly, making enforcement more effective.'
Warning from Authorities
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani has warned that such checking operations will be intensified across Nagpur in the coming days. The focus will be on targeting speeding, wrong-side driving, and substance abuse. Matani urged citizens to adhere to traffic regulations and avoid driving under any form of intoxication.
The Nagpur city police appealed to the public for cooperation, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility. Commissioner Singal remarked, 'By following traffic rules and staying away from drugs or alcohol while driving, we can save precious lives.'
The checkpoint operation is part of a broader effort to curb drug-related offenses and enhance road safety in the city. Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the arrested driver pending further investigation.
