The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which oversees the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, has refused to disclose its financial records amid a growing controversy over alleged embezzlement of funds. The trust, in a statement issued on Thursday, cited legal provisions under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, arguing that it is not a public authority and therefore not obligated to share its financial details.
Allegations of Fund Misuse Surface
The controversy erupted after a former trust member alleged that a significant portion of the donations received for the temple construction had been misappropriated. The whistleblower claimed that over Rs 1,000 crore collected from devotees worldwide had not been properly accounted for. The trust, however, dismissed these allegations as baseless and malicious.
In its official response, the trust stated, "The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is a private trust registered under the Indian Trusts Act. It is not a 'public authority' as defined under the RTI Act. Therefore, it is not required to disclose its financial records to the public." The trust further asserted that all funds have been utilized transparently and that the construction of the temple is progressing as per schedule.
Legal and Political Reactions
The decision has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and transparency activists. Congress spokesperson Pramod Tiwari said, "If the trust has nothing to hide, why is it refusing to share financial records? The public has a right to know how their donations are being used." He demanded that the trust voluntarily disclose its accounts or face legal action.
Legal experts, however, pointed out that the trust's stance is legally tenable. Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan explained, "Under the RTI Act, only bodies that are substantially funded by the government or are created by a statute qualify as public authorities. The Ram Temple Trust does not fall under this category." He added that the trust could still be compelled to disclose information if a court orders it.
Impact on Temple Construction
Despite the controversy, the trust confirmed that construction work on the Ram Temple is on track. The temple is expected to be completed by January 2024, in time for the consecration ceremony. According to trust officials, over 70% of the construction has been completed, and the remaining work is proceeding without any financial hurdles.
The trust also released a statement assuring devotees that their contributions are being used solely for the temple's construction and associated charitable activities. It urged the public not to be misled by "unsubstantiated allegations" and reiterated its commitment to transparency within the bounds of the law.
