Amazon CEO Andy Jassy met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday and announced plans to invest an additional $13 billion in India by 2030. The investment will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure, building on Amazon's previous commitments in the country.
Details of the Investment
The new investment brings Amazon's total planned investment in India to $26 billion by 2030. The company has already invested $11 billion in India as of 2023, with a previous commitment of $6.5 billion announced in 2020. The additional funds will go toward expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in India and developing AI capabilities.
Jassy said in a statement, "India is incredibly vibrant and we see enormous opportunity here. Our investment will support India's digital transformation and help create jobs." The announcement came after a meeting where the two leaders discussed technology, innovation, and skilling.
Impact on Indian Tech Ecosystem
The investment is expected to boost India's position as a global tech hub. AWS already operates two data center regions in India—in Mumbai and Hyderabad—and a third in Chennai is under construction. The new funding will likely support additional regions and AI services tailored for Indian businesses and startups.
PM Modi welcomed the investment, stating, "This reflects confidence in India's growth story and its skilled workforce." The move aligns with India's push to become a $5 trillion economy and its National AI Strategy.
Broader Context
Amazon's announcement comes amid heightened global interest in AI and cloud computing. India is one of the fastest-growing markets for these technologies, driven by digital adoption and government initiatives. Rivals like Microsoft and Google have also made significant investments in India's cloud and AI sectors.
The investment is expected to create thousands of jobs in engineering, data science, and infrastructure management. It also supports Amazon's goal of making India a key hub for its global AI research and development.
