Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has firmly stated that none of his party's Members of Parliament will leave, amidst the ongoing political turmoil following the split in Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena faction. Pawar's remarks came in response to claims by NCP MLA and former minister Dharmaraobaba Atram that five NCP MPs are in touch with the faction led by Sunetra Pawar, who is the wife of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Pawar and Sule Deny Defection Rumors
Speaking to reporters, Sharad Pawar said, "None of our MPs will leave. The party is united." His statement was echoed by NCP MP Supriya Sule, who also dismissed the defection rumors as baseless. The developments come as the political landscape in Maharashtra witnesses significant shifts, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction led by Uddhav Thackeray experiencing a split, leading to realignments among allies.
Background of the Political Crisis
The crisis in Maharashtra began when a faction of Shiv Sena MLAs, led by Eknath Shinde, broke away from Uddhav Thackeray's leadership, forming a government with the BJP. This triggered a series of political maneuvers, including the NCP's internal dynamics. The NCP, which was part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, has seen its own divisions, with Ajit Pawar leading a faction that joined the ruling coalition.
Claims by Dharmaraobaba Atram
Dharmaraobaba Atram, a senior NCP leader and former minister, had earlier claimed that five NCP MPs are in contact with the Sunetra Pawar-led faction. However, both Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule have categorically denied these assertions, emphasizing party unity. Atram's statement had raised concerns about further fragmentation within the NCP, but the top leadership's reassurance appears to have quelled immediate speculation.
Impact on Maharashtra Politics
The stability of the ruling coalition and the opposition MVA remains a subject of intense discussion. With the NCP's Sharad Pawar asserting control over his party's MPs, the opposition camp may see some consolidation. However, the defection of any MP could alter the balance of power in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, where the NCP holds significant seats. Political analysts suggest that the coming weeks will be crucial for the NCP's internal cohesion and its role in Maharashtra politics.
