Samson Breaks Silence on RR Departure
Sanju Samson has finally revealed the reasons behind his surprising move from Rajasthan Royals (RR) to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the IPL 2026 season. The wicketkeeper-batter, who spent over a decade with RR, also addressed speculation about his captaincy ambitions.
In an exclusive interview, Samson stated that the decision to leave RR was mutual and based on the team's long-term plans. He said, "I have immense respect for the franchise, but we both felt it was time for a fresh start. I was offered a leadership role at CSK, which excited me."
No Captaincy Demand: The Inside Story
Samson clarified that he never demanded the captaincy at RR, contrary to rumors. "I've always been a team player. Leading RR was a privilege, but I never insisted on retaining the role. The management had their vision, and I respected it," he explained. According to sources, RR had decided to appoint a new captain for the next cycle, prompting Samson's exit.
The 30-year-old also revealed that his decision was influenced by CSK's stable environment and the opportunity to learn from MS Dhoni. "Playing under Mahi bhai has been a dream. His mentorship is invaluable," he added.
Impact on IPL 2026
Samson's transfer has sent ripples through the IPL. CSK paid a record ₹22 crore to secure his services, making him the most expensive Indian player in the 2026 mega auction. RR, in turn, acquired young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and all-rounder Riyan Parag from CSK in a swap deal.
Cricket analysts believe Samson's move strengthens CSK's middle order. "With Samson at No. 3, CSK have a proven match-winner. His ability to anchor innings will complement the aggressive openers," said former India cricketer Aakash Chopra.
