Six Athletes Secure Asian Games 2026 Spots at National Championships
On Day 2 of the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, six athletes from the Reliance Foundation delivered standout performances, booking their places for the Asian Games 2026. The event, held on Thursday, saw the contingent excel across track and field events, meeting the qualifying criteria for the continental championship to be held in Japan later this year.
Gold and Silver in Sprints
In the sprints, Animesh Kujur won the Gold medal in the Men's 200m, while Harita Bhadra claimed Gold in the Women's 200m. Rising star Unnathi Aiyappa added a Silver in the Women's 200m, further highlighting the depth of talent in the Reliance Foundation program. According to a press release, these athletes demonstrated exceptional speed and technique to secure their spots.
Middle-Distance and Field Events Success
Experienced runner Md Afsal dominated the Men's 800m to win Gold, clocking 1:47.69 minutes, which met the Asian Games qualifying mark. In field events, Krishna Menon secured a Silver in Shot Put, and Baranica E cleared the bar for a Silver in Women's Pole Vault. All six athletes successfully breached the selection criteria, marking a highly successful second day for the program.
Jyothi Yarraji's Comeback
On Day 1, athlete Jyothi Yarraji made an unforgettable comeback after 383 days away from the track. She won Gold in the women's 100m hurdles, running 13.14 seconds in the opening heats, and booked her Asian Games berth. The Asian Games 2026 are scheduled from September 19 to October 4 in Japan.
