Since early morning on Sunday, Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Indore witnessed extensive religious observances coinciding with Mahashivratri. Amid the traditional celebrations, priests performed a dedicated puja specifically for the Indian cricket team. Photographs of players were ceremoniously carried into the sanctum sanctorum and placed near the sacred Shivling.

Similar scenes unfolded at Angareshwar Temple in Ujjain, where over 50 priests and devotees gathered on Sunday morning. They conducted a havan and performed special rituals focused on the cricket match. Photographs of key players including Suryakumar Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube were prominently displayed near the Shivling during the ceremony.
Devotees offered heartfelt prayers and sought divine intervention for a decisive victory. The gathering reflected the deep emotional connection between cricket and cultural traditions in India.
Priest Explains the Spiritual Significance
Priest Manish Upadhyay, who led the ceremonies at Angareshwar Temple, explained the rationale behind the special prayers. "We offered prayers to Lord Angareshwar, who is regarded as a symbol of strength and valour," he said. "Our intention was to seek blessings for the Indian team to play with confidence and achieve victory in this crucial match."
The rituals underscore how major sporting events, particularly India-Pakistan cricket matches, transcend mere games to become national events that engage diverse aspects of Indian society, including religious institutions.
