Road to the title

India finished second in Pool A with wins over Canada (3-0) and Spain (2-1), and a draw against South Korea (1-1). In the semifinals, they defeated Japan 3-2 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. New Zealand topped Pool B with wins over Chile, Ireland, and the United States.

Goalkeeper Savita Punia was named Player of the Tournament for her outstanding performances throughout the competition, including two penalty shootout saves in the semifinal.

Pro League return

With this win, India earns a spot in the 2026-27 FIH Pro League, joining the world's top teams. The Pro League features nine core teams, including Olympic champions Netherlands, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, China, and the United States.

India previously competed in the Pro League from 2022 to 2024 but was relegated after finishing last in the 2023-24 season. Their return marks a significant achievement for the team under coach Janneke Schopman.

“This is a proud moment for Indian hockey. The team showed great character and determination throughout the tournament. Winning the Nations Cup and securing promotion to the Pro League is a testament to their hard work,” said Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey in a statement.
