Iran Leaves Fair Play Note After 1-1 Draw with Egypt

Iran Sends Message on Sportsmanship After Draw

Iran's national football team left a handwritten note in the locker room at Seattle's stadium following their 1-1 draw with Egypt in Group G of the FIFA World Cup 2026, emphasizing fair play and respect. The result confirmed Egypt's historic qualification to the knockout stage for the first time.

The note, shared on X by Tasnim News Agency, read: "We come from Iran... A land that, for thousands of years, has valued honor above victory. For us, football is more than a competition for results; it is a test of character. Perhaps points can be won in many ways, but respect cannot. Perhaps a team can advance from a group, but only through fairness and honour can one stand tall before history. Fair play is not just a line in football rules; it is the soul of the game. Thank you, Seattle, for your hospitality and thank you to all Iranians, who gave their hearts, their voices and their whole being for Iran. Iran, always standing tall."

Previous Gesture in Los Angeles

This gesture followed a similar one after Iran's 0-0 draw with Belgium at SoFi Stadium on Sunday. According to Reuters, Iran left a note thanking Los Angeles for hospitality, stating: "From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast." The note concluded: "We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity."

Match Details: Egypt Secures Historic Knockout Berth

In the match, Egypt took an early lead when Mahmoud Saber scored from close range after Mohamed Salah's deflected shot was parried by goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Iran quickly earned a penalty in the ninth minute when Mehdi Taremi was fouled by Mohamed Abdelmonem, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved the spot kick. Shobeir also denied Milad Mohammadi before Iran equalized through Ramin Rezaeian, who reacted quickest to finish from a tight angle.

Shobeir continued his strong performance, dealing with a dangerous cross and saving from Shoja Khalilzadeh before halftime. After the break, Egypt controlled possession to manage the tempo, aware that other group results could affect their standing. Iran pushed for a late winner, but a stoppage-time goal was ruled out for offside after VAR review. Shobeir then made another crucial save from Saeid Ezatolahi to secure the point for Egypt's progression.

Ramin Rezaeian was named Player of the Match for his influential performance in the closely contested encounter.
