India Dominates Inaugural World Yogasana Championships

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian athletes for their record-breaking performance at the first World Yogasana Championships, held at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad. India secured a total of 114 medals, including 102 gold, topping the medal standings. Japan finished second with 11 medals (3 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze), and Argentina's Nabila Barraza earned two gold and three silver medals for third place.

Addressing the 135th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said, 'India won a total of 114 medals in this event, including 102 gold medals. India topped the medal tally at this championship. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all the winning athletes.'

Global Participation and Growing Recognition

The championship featured 522 athletes from 78 countries, marking a milestone for Yogasana as a competitive sport. Countries from the Middle East, including Oman, Jordan, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, participated, signaling the discipline's expanding global footprint.

PM Modi also highlighted the International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 21, which saw events at over 2,500 locations worldwide. The theme for 2026 was 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing,' focusing on long-term health and wellness. Modi led the national event in Kolkata, performing asanas with thousands at Red Road.

Background of International Yoga Day

The United Nations General Assembly adopted India's proposal for International Yoga Day in December 2014, following an initiative by PM Modi. The 2026 observance marks the 12th edition of the global event.
