Parineeti Mall, a 13-year-old goalkeeper from Melbourne with Punjabi roots, has been selected to represent the Southern Sharks at Australia's under-14 Junior State Hockey Championship. Born and raised in Melbourne, she remains deeply connected to her heritage through language and Bhangra.
Family background and migration
Parineeti's father, Shinder Pal, hails from Ludhiana, while her mother, Kamaljit Kaur, is originally from Nawanshahr. The family moved to Australia in 2009 seeking better opportunities. "We wanted a better future for ourselves. Today, I work in the NDIS sector, my husband runs his own business, and our daughter is making us proud," said Kamaljit Kaur.
Early talent and dual sports
Neither parent comes from a sporting background, but Parineeti's talent in hockey was recognized early. She established herself as a promising goalkeeper and also excels in soccer. Alongside sports, she is an accomplished Bhangra performer, often teaching others in the community. "She is a Bhangra expert as well. People often ask her to teach them," her mother added.
Academic aspirations and cultural pride
Parineeti dreams of representing Australia internationally and joining the national hockey team. She maintains an impressive academic record and aspires to become a neurologist. "She is academically very strong and wants to become a neurologist in the future," Kamaljit Kaur noted. Despite being born in Australia, Parineeti speaks fluent Punjabi and loves Bhangra. "You meet her and you will say she is a true Punjabi," her mother said.
Celebration in Punjab
In Nawanshahr, Parineeti's maternal uncle Manjit Bali celebrated her achievement with members of the Daily Morning Football Club, where he plays. "My niece has brought glory to our family and made us all proud," Bali said. Club chairman Tarsem Lal remarked that Parineeti's success brings pride to her parents and recognition to Punjab on an international platform.
