Vlasic's Header Seals Victory for Croatia
Nikola Vlasic headed home a dramatic late goal as Croatia secured a 2-1 victory over Ghana to book their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 32 on Saturday. The match, played in Philadelphia, saw Vlasic rise highest in the 83rd minute to meet a pinpoint corner from Luka Modric, restoring Croatia's lead just 10 minutes after Ghana had equalized.
Ghana's Equalizer and VAR Drama
Derrick Luckassen had leveled the score for Ghana in the 73rd minute, heading home from a free-kick delivery by Ernest Nuamah. The goal was initially subject to a lengthy VAR review lasting nearly four minutes, which confirmed that Luckassen was not offside. That canceled out Petar Sucic's superb long-range opener for Croatia in the 31st minute, a strike that found the bottom left corner.
Croatia's Route to the Knockout Stage
Despite the defeat, Ghana still progressed to the round of 32 as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams. Croatia's victory also extinguished Scotland's slim hopes of reaching the knockout stage. England finished top of Group L after their 2-0 victory over Panama, while Croatia sealed second place with their win over Ghana. Ghana, who had already secured qualification before the final round of group matches, advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.
Upcoming Fixtures
Ghana will face the winners of Group K, either Portugal or Colombia, on Friday in Kansas City. Croatia's opponent in the round of 32 has yet to be determined. The victory marked Croatia's second win in Group L, ensuring their place in the knockout phase of the tournament.
