Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana conducted a raid on a medical shop in Ramanthapur for allegedly selling habit-forming medicines without a valid prescription. Officials seized 120 bottles of a codeine-based cough syrup during the operation.

Details of the Raid

Acting on specific intelligence, DCA officials raided SVR Medicals located at Sri Nagar Colony, Ramanthapur, on Saturday. The team seized stocks of codeine-containing Tossex cough syrup and tramadol-containing Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus capsules. The medical shop owners, identified as V Raju and V Savitha, were found to be selling these drugs without prescriptions from registered medical practitioners.

Violations Discovered

The inspection revealed multiple violations of the Drugs Rules, including failure to maintain mandatory records, inability to produce sales bills, and non-maintenance of the Schedule H1 drug register. These lapses are considered serious under the regulatory framework.

During the raid, officials confiscated 20 bottles of Tossex cough syrup, each containing 120 ml, totaling 120 bottles. The seized items are now part of an ongoing investigation.

Health Risks and Legal Consequences

An official from the DCA highlighted the dangers of abusing codeine and tramadol, stating that such substances can lead to addiction, respiratory depression, seizures, coma, and even death. The illegal sale of habit-forming drugs is a serious offense under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, punishable with imprisonment of up to two years.

The DCA has urged the public to report any similar illegal activities and emphasized its commitment to curbing the misuse of prescription drugs in the region.
