Vadodara: Music enthusiasts of all ages, including young students, working professionals, homemakers, and senior citizens, will soon have the chance to formally learn music. The Vocal Music Department of the Faculty of Performing Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) has launched certificate courses in Sugam (light) music and Hindustani classical vocal music.
Admission Details and Duration
Admissions for these courses will begin on June 1. The Sugam Music Certificate Course spans 2.5 months, while the Classical Music Certificate Course runs for one year. Students aged 10 years and above are eligible to enroll. The courses are designed with affordable fees to ensure accessibility.
Sugam Music Course Curriculum
According to Dr. Rajesh Kelkar, head of the Vocal Music Department, the Sugam music course offers training in voice culture, pronunciation, rhythm and pitch recognition, poetry recitation techniques, sargam songs, taranas, Hindi film songs, ghazals, devotional songs, and folk music. The course is conducted in an interactive environment with karaoke music support and provides opportunities for students to sing using microphones. Participants will also interact with noted singers and attend their performances, gaining practical exposure to the music field.
Classical Music Course Curriculum
The one-year Classical Music Certificate Course introduces students to various ragas of Indian music, voice training techniques, Naad Yoga, raga-based compositions, and their connection with popular light music forms. Training in rhythm, sargam, tarana, and thumri is also included in the curriculum.
Target Audience and Schedule
These courses are specially designed for school and college students, professionals, working individuals, and homemakers. Classes are held three days a week during evening hours, providing an avenue for recreation, creativity, and mental well-being through music. Dr. Kelkar emphasized that the initiative helps citizens connect with music, appreciate India's rich cultural heritage, and become active participants in preserving and promoting it.
