A pilot project aimed at creating dedicated lanes for bicycles and slow-moving vehicles like two and three-wheelers has been launched on two road stretches in Jalandhar. The initiative, led by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Nitin Kohli, seeks to improve safety and convenience for non-motorized and slow traffic.
Stretches Identified for the Project
The two stretches selected for the pilot project are from Nakodar Chowk to Football Chowk and from Football Chowk to Kapurthala Chowk. As part of the project, these lanes are being painted green to clearly mark them for cycles and slow vehicles.
Kohli stated, "We have tried to initiate the project on a pilot basis from a section of road between BMC Chowk and the bus stand." He emphasized that the project requires coordinated efforts between the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, and the Commissionerate Police.
Future Plans and Coordination
Kohli added that once the new Commissioner Satinder Singh takes charge in the city, he will discuss traffic management plans with him. So far, discussions have been held with the Mayor and the MC Commissioner regarding the project.
Historical Context
A similar project was planned over 13 years ago during the SAD-BJP government's tenure but could not materialize because city roads were deemed not wide enough to segregate traffic effectively.
Demands from City Residents
City residents, particularly those who cycle in the morning, have been demanding separate lanes at least until 7:30 am and on Sundays to allow them to cycle safely and conveniently. The demand was raised by members of the Hawk Cycling Club and Ride to Road Club during the recent World Bicycle Day celebrations.
Kohli believes that with proper planning and coordination, the pilot project can be expanded to other parts of the city, promoting eco-friendly transportation and reducing traffic congestion.
