Kochi: In a bid to upgrade passenger amenities and boost non-fare revenue, the railways is set to expand its prepaid air-conditioned waiting halls from the main concourse onto the island or second platforms of major stations under Thiruvananthapuram division. Currently, the premium AC lounges are restricted to platform No. 1.
Expansion to Island Platforms
“We have started the process of setting up AC glass cubicles in island platforms as well. Passengers are currently forced to wait for trains in hot and humid conditions, especially in the afternoons. Hence, we expect a similar response to that of our AC waiting lounges set up at the main platforms,” a senior railway official said. In the initial phase, the facility will be introduced at Ernakulam Town, Aluva and Thiruvananthapuram Central (second platform) railway stations. Passengers will have to pay Rs 30 to avail the service.
Premium Lounges at Main Platforms
Meanwhile at Chalakudy station, railway will soon set up a premium AC lounge at the main platform. “All main stations will have the facility. Ernakulam Junction (South) will receive these glass lounges once its ongoing comprehensive station redevelopment activities are finalized,” the official added.
Design and Amenities
Unlike the sprawling premium lounges on main platforms, the island platform cubicles are designed for quick transit comfort. Because they are constructed as self-contained glass structures in limited spaces, they will not feature restroom facilities like toilets and washbasins. However, the railways is introducing a unique entertainment facility — trailer theatres. “For a nominal additional fee, passengers can sink into premium recliners and watch trailers of upcoming films while waiting for trains,” the official added.
Revenue Generation Strategy
The initiative is part of the railways’ strategy to diversify income beyond traditional ticket sales. By leveraging high footfall, the division is transforming platform spaces into vibrant commercial zones. Railways is introducing dedicated outlets on platforms for cosmetics, including perfumes and personal care items. Furthermore, a new ‘branded trolley’ initiative will be rolled out aboard Vande Bharat trains. “Under this, selected vendors can sell retail products, such as books, gaming equipment and beauty products, directly to passengers,” the official added.
