Ahmedabad: With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), several new courses have emerged in the past couple of years. Along with these technologies, rising market demand for specializations in fields such as management and data science has prompted state-based institutions to offer dual degree programs, both in terms of duration and institutions involved.
Nirma University: BTech-MBA Track
At Nirma University, students can opt for a BTech-MBA track. G Ramchandran Nair, registrar of the university, said the course is in demand due to growing career opportunities for managers who understand technology and numbers. “The pay package is high for MBA graduates with an engineering base. It also helps that the dual degree is completed in a matter of five years,” he said.
Ahmedabad University: BxMx Dual Degree Program
At Ahmedabad University, students can opt for the BxMx dual degree program, where they can earn their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in different subjects seamlessly within five years.
International Collaborations: 2+2 Model
Both Nirma University and Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) have multiple international collaborations under the ‘2+2 model’, where students get the opportunity to complete two years of the course at an international university under special arrangements, earning global exposure along with their degree. Officials said such programs are popular among students looking to pursue higher education abroad.
Adani University: Industry-Ready Professionals
Prof Dhaval Pujara, provost of Adani University, said the university integrates fields such as civil and infrastructure engineering and energy engineering with MBA in project management and energy management respectively to meet industry demands. A third integrated course is BTech in computer science and applied mathematics with MTech in cloud computing. “The idea is to create industry-ready professionals and researchers with a multi-disciplinary approach,” he said.
Gujarat Technological University: Technical and Management Degrees
At Gujarat Technological University (GTU), too, students can opt for a technical degree along with a management qualification. Experts said that in the majority of courses, an exit option is available after completion of the first degree. They pointed out that while conventional fields such as LLB have had integrated programs for years, the concept of dual degrees in technical education aims to combine two specializations. “These courses offer clear pathways for students who are sure of their career choices,” said a city-based educationist.
