SPPU Sees Surge in AI, Cyber Security Course Applications

The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is experiencing a significant shift in student preferences, with a growing number of applicants opting for emerging and industry-oriented courses such as artificial intelligence, cyber security, data analytics, and blockchain technology. The university has observed a sharp increase in applications for multidisciplinary and skill-based programmes, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Changing Student Preferences

University officials have noted that students are increasingly moving beyond conventional degree choices. Instead of traditional MA and MSc programmes, many are now opting for courses that integrate technology, research, and employability. Newer fields like bioinformatics, innovation and entrepreneurship, space and defence studies, and multidisciplinary sciences have attracted a strong response from applicants.

Admission Deadline Extended

In response to the high volume of applications and technical difficulties faced by some students during document uploads, SPPU has extended the admission deadline for the academic year 2026-27. The revised deadline for undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated, and multidisciplinary programmes is now May 20, 2026, until 11:59 PM. The original deadline was May 15.

The university had initially announced the admission schedule on April 11 and issued a revised circular on May 5. A fresh notification extending the application deadline was released this week.

Reasons for the Extension

An official associated with the admission process stated: “The response pattern reflects changing student priorities, with many applicants seeking programmes directly linked to future careers, research opportunities, and evolving industry demands.” The extension is expected to benefit students who were unable to complete their applications due to documentation issues or last-minute delays.

Admission Process

All admissions are conducted online through the postgraduate admissions department. The selection process involves an online entrance examination worth 100 marks. The entire application process is fully online, and university authorities have appealed to students to complete the process well before the revised deadline to avoid last-minute issues.

Upcoming Schedule

The university is expected to announce the detailed schedule for entrance examinations, merit lists, and subsequent admission rounds on its official website in the coming days.
