Telegram Back on Indian App Stores
Telegram, the popular messaging app, has been reinstated on Google Play Store and Apple App Store in India after a brief suspension. The app was temporarily removed on June 20, 2026, for non-compliance with India's Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
According to sources, Telegram addressed the concerns raised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), leading to its restoration. The app is now available for download across both platforms.
Why Was Telegram Banned?
The temporary ban followed Telegram's failure to comply with the IT rules, which mandate messaging platforms to enable traceability of the first originator of messages. Telegram had resisted implementing this feature, citing privacy concerns. The government had given Telegram a deadline to comply, but the company missed it, resulting in the removal from app stores.
“We have always prioritized user privacy, but we are committed to operating within the legal frameworks of the countries we serve,” a Telegram spokesperson said in a statement.
Impact on Users
During the suspension, existing users could still use the app, but new users could not download it. The ban affected Telegram's growth in India, which is one of its largest markets with over 100 million monthly active users. The reinstatement is expected to restore normalcy for the app's operations.
Analysts estimate that the three-day ban could have cost Telegram approximately 1 million potential new downloads.
Government's Stance
The Indian government has been firm on enforcing the IT rules to ensure accountability and prevent misuse of messaging platforms for illegal activities. “We welcome compliance from all platforms. The rules are designed to protect citizens and uphold national security,” a MeitY official said.
The reinstatement of Telegram signals a resolution of the issue, though the company will need to maintain compliance to avoid future actions.
