WhatsApp is rolling out a new update for Android beta testers that introduces a green online indicator and revamped backup management tools. The feature, spotted by WABetaInfo in version 2.24.12.10, aims to improve user visibility and control over data storage.
Green Online Indicator
The green online indicator replaces the current blue dot that appears when a contact is actively using WhatsApp. According to WABetaInfo, the change is part of a broader redesign to align with WhatsApp's color scheme. The indicator will appear as a green circle next to the contact's profile picture in chats and the contact list. It is designed to be more noticeable and consistent across the app.
New Backup Management Tools
Additionally, WhatsApp is testing a dedicated backup management section within settings. This feature allows users to view the size of their chat backups, see when the last backup was performed, and manually trigger a backup. Users can also choose to exclude videos from backups to save space. The tool provides a clear breakdown of backup data, including messages, media, and documents.
WABetaInfo notes that the backup management feature is still under development and may not be available to all beta testers yet. It is expected to roll out widely in future updates.
Impact on Users
These changes are part of WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and data management. The green indicator helps users quickly identify active contacts, while the backup tools offer more granular control over data storage, which is particularly useful for users with limited cloud storage. According to WABetaInfo, the features are currently in beta and may undergo changes before public release.
