The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) and drones to identify potholes and other defects on national highways. The initiative aims to enhance road safety and maintenance efficiency.
AI-Powered Dashcam Analytics
The authority is rolling out AI-powered Dashcam Analytics Services (DASs) across operational highways. This system automatically detects issues such as potholes, damaged crash barriers, faulty lighting, and drainage problems. The technology uses video feeds from dashcams installed in vehicles to analyze road conditions in real time.
Drone Surveillance
In addition to dashcams, drones will be used to survey stretches of highways that are difficult to access. The drones will capture high-resolution images and videos, which will be processed by AI algorithms to identify defects. This combined approach ensures comprehensive monitoring of road infrastructure.
The NHAI expects that the use of AI and drones will significantly reduce the time taken to identify and repair road defects, leading to safer travel for commuters. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize India's highway network using advanced technology.
