The Bank of Italy has taken proactive measures to address escalating cybersecurity threats by initiating urgent discussions with global artificial intelligence (AI) companies. This move comes ahead of the introduction of powerful new AI models into the financial sector. Central Bank Governor Fabio Panetta disclosed these developments during his annual keynote address on Friday, May 29. He revealed that the regulator has recently begun dialogues with national authorities, banks, and their technology providers to preempt potential dangers.
Discussions with Anthropic
The Bank of Italy's talks with companies like Anthropic aim to ensure that advanced AI systems are implemented safely and securely before becoming widely available to the public. Governor Panetta emphasized that the responsibility for safety ultimately rests with the banks. If a bank outsources its technology to third-party providers, those companies bear the same level of responsibility to safeguard data and funds.
Anthropic's Mythos Model
According to a report by Reuters, central to the supervisors' concerns is Anthropic's new AI model named "Mythos." Initially designed to identify flaws in computer code and strengthen cyber defenses, Mythos has been withheld from release by its creators. Security experts warn that the model is a double-edged sword: its advanced capabilities could be weaponized by malicious actors to launch devastating cyberattacks against the very banking systems it was meant to protect.
Call for Investment in Digital Defenses
With European banks recently reporting record profits, Panetta urged executives to allocate these additional funds toward upgrading their digital defenses. However, he stressed that addressing cybersecurity is not solely a technological challenge.
"The response cannot be purely technological," Panetta stated, insisting that bank executives must take clear responsibility, establish strict internal protocols, and develop emergency plans to respond instantly to cyberattacks.
