Gavin McKenna Opens Up on Joining Maple Leafs as Top Draft Prospect
Gavin McKenna Speaks on Maple Leafs Draft Possibility

The Toronto Maple Leafs are weighing their options for the 2026 NHL Draft, and projected top prospect Gavin McKenna has spoken about his possibilities as discussions around the No. 1 overall pick intensify. Earlier, Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka acknowledged that the franchise might not simply use the top selection to choose McKenna, preferring to explore all avenues before making a final decision.

Maple Leafs GM Keeps Options Open

John Chayka revealed that the organization is not ruling out trading the pick, emphasizing that every scenario must be considered for the team's benefit. Despite McKenna being widely regarded as the top prospect for several years, Chayka stated, "I would say the probability is we take the pick just realistically... Obviously, everything is for sale at the right price, but to date, nothing is compelling that we’re seriously considering, but there’s still time."

McKenna's Confidence in Joining Toronto

Gavin McKenna has expressed his feelings about possibly joining the Maple Leafs after the team secured the first overall selection despite entering the lottery with just an 8.5% chance, as reported by The Big Lead on Saturday. Speaking to the Toronto Sun, he said, “Going to a Canadian market would be pretty special. The situation the Leafs are in right now it’s pretty crazy that they got the first overall pick; their team is probably going to be fighting for the playoffs next year. I’d be pretty fortunate to go there.”

McKenna also addressed the media speculation surrounding his draft status, noting that he has gone through similar processes before. “We’ve gone through similar things with media and the pressure,” he said. “He’s always a brain I like to go to… He kinda just tells me to trust the process and stay confident. Sometimes it’s hard, but hockey is a big confidence game.”

McKenna's Impressive Skills and Stats

At 18 years old, McKenna has recorded 15 goals and 51 points in 35 games, showcasing his playmaking skills, skating prowess, and goal-scoring abilities. He is considered one of the most coveted draft prospects in recent years. While the Maple Leafs are keeping their options open, reports suggest that McKenna will likely join the club when the draft begins in June 2026.
