Google Chrome Introduces Revolutionary AI Assistant 'Auto Browse' Powered by Gemini
In a significant move to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday browsing, Google has announced the launch of a new AI assistant feature called Auto Browse for its Chrome browser. This innovative tool, powered by the company's advanced Gemini AI model, is designed to automate web-based tasks by opening websites and interacting with them on behalf of users, potentially saving substantial time and effort.
How Auto Browse Works and Its Key Features
According to Charmaine D'Silva, a director of product at Google, the Auto Browse feature will allow Chrome users to delegate various online activities to the Gemini-powered assistant. For instance, users can ask Gemini to plan a family trip by automatically opening different airline and hotel websites to compare prices, all without leaving the Chrome browser. This seamless integration aims to streamline complex tasks that typically require multiple tabs and manual input.
Parisa Tabriz, vice president of Chrome, highlighted in a blog post that testers have utilized Auto Browse for a wide range of applications. These include scheduling appointments, filling out tedious online forms, collecting tax documents, obtaining quotes for services like plumbers and electricians, checking bill payments, filing expense reports, managing subscriptions, and speeding up processes such as renewing driving licenses. Tabriz emphasized that this has resulted in "a ton of time saved" for users, showcasing the practical benefits of AI-driven automation.
Integration with Personal Intelligence and Safety Measures
This rollout is part of Alphabet Inc.'s broader strategy to weave AI advancements across its product ecosystem. Earlier this month, Google revealed that Gemini can access user data from services like Gmail, Search, Photos, and YouTube to personalize responses through a feature called Personal Intelligence. When activated on Chrome, this allows the Gemini assistant to assist with logistics, such as checking school schedules and existing appointments to find optimal travel options, as explained by D'Silva during a media call.
Auto Browse will initially be available to US subscribers of AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. It will leverage Google Password Manager to sign into websites on the user's behalf, enhancing convenience while maintaining security. Additionally, Google is introducing its image generation tool, Nano Banana, directly into Chrome as part of this launch, further expanding the browser's AI capabilities.
Safeguards and Future Implications
To address potential concerns, Google has implemented safeguards to ensure the agentic AI does not make final decisions, such as placing orders, without explicit user permission. Tabriz noted during the call that the company is using AI and on-device models to protect users from evolving threats, including AI-generated scams and sophisticated cyberattacks.
