IMD Predicts Thunderstorms and Heatwaves Across India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather forecast indicating that tourists traveling to various destinations across India may encounter weather-related disruptions in the coming days. The bulletin predicts thunderstorms, rainfall, hailstorms, strong winds, and heatwaves in multiple regions, potentially impacting travel plans and transit routes.

Regional Weather Breakdown

Northeast India

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until May 10. The IMD has issued warnings for isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. Such conditions may lead to landslides, low visibility, and waterlogging, affecting road travel and local mobility.

Eastern India

Active weather is anticipated over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Gangetic West Bengal, with heavy rains and thunderstorms. Isolated heavy rain is likely in northern West Bengal and Sikkim. A thundersquall with winds up to 70 kmph is predicted over Gangetic West Bengal on May 9, potentially causing transportation delays. Travelers heading to Darjeeling and Kalimpong should monitor weather updates closely.

Northwest India

Patchy rainfall and isolated thundershowers are expected over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and east Rajasthan until May 8. Another rainy phase is forecast for the Western Himalayan region from May 10 to 12. While rains may provide temporary relief from heat, strong winds and lightning could disrupt air and road traffic.

South India

Unstable weather conditions will prevail over Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, with patchy rainfall, lightning, and isolated gusts of wind. The IMD predicts isolated heavy showers over Tamil Nadu and Kerala for the next seven days, and over south interior Karnataka on May 7 and 8.

Heatwave and Temperature Trends

Temperatures are expected to rise gradually in Northwest and Central India. Heatwaves are likely in parts of west Rajasthan from May 9 to 11. Warm and humid conditions will prevail over Konkan, Goa, and coastal Gujarat from May 9 to 12, potentially causing discomfort for sightseeing tours and long-distance road trips.

Weather Systems in Play

The current weather is influenced by an active Western Disturbance, cyclonic circulations over Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Telangana, and a trough extending north-south over the Gulf of Mannar.

Travel Advisory

Tourists are advised to remain flexible with their schedules, stay updated on airline and railway information, and avoid venturing out during thunderstorms and hailstorms. The IMD urges caution for those planning road trips, hill station holidays, or beach vacations, as changing weather could affect visibility, transport schedules, and local mobility.
