On International Day of Yoga 2026, the Indian Navy's INS Satvahana executed an unprecedented underwater yoga session, merging physical fitness with operational preparedness. Forty personnel performed synchronised yoga postures beneath the water surface, demonstrating exceptional breath control, concentration, endurance, and composure in a demanding underwater environment.
Event Details and Purpose
According to the Navy, the initiative aimed to highlight how yoga's principles of controlled breathing, mindfulness, and discipline can enhance performance under challenging operational conditions. Participants experienced the importance of maintaining physical fitness, mental resilience, and emotional balance while working in high-pressure environments.
The session was conducted by in-house Naval Yoga practitioners and led by Lieutenant Commander Aarush Sharma. The underwater setting added an extra layer of complexity, requiring participants to maintain focus and coordination while submerged.
Alignment with Yoga Day Theme
INS Satvahana stated that the event seamlessly combined the ancient wisdom of yoga with the unique demands of underwater operations, reflecting the Navy's emphasis on holistic well-being and innovative fitness practices. The programme was organised as part of activities leading up to International Day of Yoga and aligned with this year's theme, "Yoga for One Earth, One Health."
