A 26-year-old Indian national residing in the United States died by suicide in his Chicago apartment on Thursday, reportedly due to prolonged unemployment and financial difficulties. The deceased, identified as Chandu Iraganaboyina, was a native of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, India.
Details of the Incident
Chandu had been jobless for some time and was under severe financial strain. He used a handgun to take his own life. Local police and his friends expressed confusion over how he obtained the firearm, as non-immigrants in the US are generally prohibited from possessing guns.
Community Response
Following the tragedy, Chandu's friends initiated a fundraising campaign to support the repatriation of his body to India. Volunteers from the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) are coordinating with authorities and funeral services to obtain the necessary clearances. Sai Bollineni from NRI TDP alerted Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu and Andhra Pradesh State Minister for IT and HRD Nara Lokesh to facilitate the process.
Background of the Deceased
Chandu had completed his master's degree from DePaul University in March of the previous year. He initially secured a job with a technology firm, but his contract recently ended, leaving him unemployed. Sources indicate that his family was also struggling to repay the loans taken to fund his education in the US.
Final Messages
Before his death, Chandu scheduled emails and messages to several friends, informing them of his decision to end his life due to financial troubles. A friend stated, "We are in shock and unable to understand what to do next." A roommate added, "Though we were sharing a room, none of us knew him well as he was extremely reserved. He never discussed his family issues, but what we understood was that he was dealing with financial problems, which may have contributed to his situation."
Support and Awareness
This incident highlights the immense pressure faced by international students and immigrants in the US, particularly regarding employment and financial stability. Community organizations are urging individuals to seek help and support if they experience similar difficulties.
