NEW DELHI: Artificial Intelligence presents a critical fork in the road for India's development, with the potential to either powerfully amplify the nation's demographic advantage or significantly weaken it, according to Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran. Speaking on Monday, he emphasized that the outcome depends entirely on the strategic choices made in the present moment, issuing a strong call for immediate and coordinated national action.
A Deliberate Path Required, Not Drift
Addressing the AI Impact Summit virtually during a session focused on 'Employability in the AI age', Nageswaran delivered a clear directive. He stated that technological adoption, particularly of AI, must be deliberately aligned with the goal of mass employability rather than being left to evolve haphazardly on its own. "This will not happen by drift," he asserted, underscoring the need for proactive governance.
"It will require political will, state capacity, and a firm national commitment to aligning technological adoption with mass employability," Nageswaran elaborated, framing the challenge as one requiring concerted effort from all sectors of society.
AI as a Pivotal Moment for India's Growth
Nageswaran positioned the rise of AI as a pivotal, defining moment in India's long-term growth journey. He argued that while the technology itself is transformative, the ultimate result for the nation will be shaped decisively by the quality of its execution and policy framework.
"India can be the first large society where human abundance and machine intelligence reinforce, and not undermine, each other," he said, painting a vision of synergistic coexistence. "The outcome will not be accidental," he cautioned, reiterating that success is contingent on deliberate strategy.

Outlining the essential first steps, the Chief Economic Adviser stated that the path to co-creating widespread prosperity with AI begins with a dual focus on education and skills. He emphasized the urgent need to strengthen foundational learning across the population.
