India's Semiconductor Progress Can Transform Nation into Tech Powerhouse

Prayagraj: India's progress in the semiconductor sector has the potential to transform the nation into a global technological powerhouse, contributing significantly to economic growth, innovation and national strategic capabilities.

These views were expressed by Satya Narayan Gupta, president of the VLSI Society of India, while inaugurating the one-month summer training programme on VLSI design (STPVD) at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A), on Friday.

The training programme aims to equip students and young professionals with advanced knowledge and practical skills in the rapidly evolving field of Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design and semiconductor technology.

Gupta spoke on the topic “VLSI Industry Insights: Trends and Opportunities.” He highlighted the latest developments in the global semiconductor ecosystem, emerging trends in chip design, artificial intelligence-enabled hardware and the growing demand for skilled VLSI professionals. He elaborated on the expanding opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing, design automation, embedded systems and advanced electronics, emphasising the crucial role India is poised to play in the global semiconductor value chain. Gupta also discussed government initiatives to promote semiconductor manufacturing and innovation under various national missions.

IIIT Allahabad director, Prof Mukul Sharad Sutaone, emphasised the strategic importance of the semiconductor industry in shaping the future of technology and economic growth.

“The programme would significantly contribute to capacity building in the VLSI and semiconductor domain and support India’s vision of becoming a global leader in electronics and semiconductor technologies,” he said.

Over 80 BTech and BE students from across the country are participating in the programme.
