Bhubaneswar: The state's green building movement is gaining significant momentum, with officials reporting that Odisha now has 285 projects registered with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), covering a total of 57.57 million square feet. These projects span commercial, residential, industrial, and net-zero segments, reflecting a broad-based shift toward sustainable construction.
Green Odisha Conclave Highlights
The figures were unveiled at the third edition of the Green Odisha Conclave, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry-Indian Green Building Council (CII-IGBC) in Bhubaneswar. The event brought together policymakers, urban planners, and industry leaders to discuss strategies for sustainable growth. According to IGBC data, the state's green portfolio includes 236 commercial projects, 31 residential developments, and a mix of industrial, logistics, and transit infrastructure projects.
Key Speeches and Insights
Odisha State Pollution Control Board member secretary Manoj V Nair emphasized that the state's rapid industrial expansion must align with environmental responsibility. "Sustainability must become integral to how we plan, design and operate our buildings and industries," he stated. Director of town planning Satrughna Kar stressed the importance of integrating climate-resilient and resource-efficient approaches into urban planning. "The cities we build today must be sustainable and inclusive for future generations," he added.
Experts at the conclave highlighted that the steady rise in certified green projects reflects increasing awareness among developers and industries. However, they called for stronger policy support and wider adoption of low-carbon technologies to sustain the momentum. Manonjay Rath, chairman of IGBC Bhubaneswar, noted that Odisha stands at a critical juncture where rapid urbanization and industrial growth present an opportunity to create future-ready, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
The conclave underscored the need for collaborative efforts between government, industry, and civil society to drive the green building movement forward. With 285 registered projects and growing awareness, Odisha is poised to become a leader in sustainable development in India.
