Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Outreach Session on 'Ensuring a Safe, Rapid and Efficient Rollout of Artificial Intelligence' at the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on Wednesday. He underscored that while AI is a transformative force capable of redefining human civilization, it must ultimately empower people.
India's Human-Centric AI Vision
Modi elaborated that India recently hosted the AI Impact Summit with this larger perspective. He emphasized that India's vision for AI is human-centric, or 'MANAV' in Hindi, and must be anchored in inclusivity, security, and public good.
Call for Democratic Access to Secure AI
Noting that India views cyberspace as a global public good, the Prime Minister stressed that democratic countries must have access to AI models that can secure their critical information infrastructure and counter cyber threats. He advocated for an integrated approach where safety, speed, and efficiency are addressed together.
Four Key Suggestions
Modi put forward four proposals: AI systems should be safe-by-design; deployment must involve common standards, testing frameworks, and regulatory guidelines; global cooperation is needed to combat deepfakes, misinformation, and cyber fraud; and the benefits of AI must reach Global South countries to ensure an inclusive world.
He concluded that AI must expand human potential, empower human choice, and protect human dignity, reaffirming India's commitment to work with partners to achieve these objectives.
Bilateral Meeting with US President Trump
On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, PM Modi met US President Donald Trump. He commended Trump's efforts leading to an understanding to end the conflict in West Asia and restore peace. Modi also stressed the importance of freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce in the Strait of Hormuz, along with seafarer safety.
Progress Under India-US COMPACT
The leaders reviewed progress under the India-US COMPACT framework since their February 2025 meeting in Washington DC. They welcomed developments in defence, strategic technologies, energy, and bilateral trade. Notably, significant progress was noted in negotiations for an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement. They instructed officials to work toward a balanced, mutually beneficial deal. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will visit India next week in this regard.
Modi and Trump reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership for mutual benefit.
