Belagavi Woman Loses Rs 2.2 Lakh in Sophisticated APK File Cyberfraud
In a distressing cyberfraud incident, a 49-year-old woman from Belawadi village in Bailhongal taluk, Belagavi district, has lost a substantial sum of Rs 2.2 lakh after falling victim to a malicious APK file scam. The case highlights the growing threat of digital deception targeting unsuspecting individuals.
How the Cyberfraud Unfolded
The victim, identified as Marigoudar, received a file titled 'Wedding Card' from an unknown mobile number. Mistaking it for a genuine digital invitation, she proceeded to download and open the APK file on her smartphone.
Immediately after opening the file, her phone began functioning erratically, displaying unusual behavior that strongly indicated a malware intrusion. Investigators believe the fraudulent application provided cybercriminals with unauthorized access to sensitive personal data stored on the device.
Financial Impact and Investigation
The malware likely enabled the theft of critical information, including:
- Mobile banking credentials
- One-time passwords (OTPs)
- Other confidential financial data
Subsequently, a total of Rs 2,17,705 was systematically siphoned off from her bank account through multiple unauthorized online transactions conducted between March 30 and April 2.
The fraud was discovered when Marigoudar received transaction alerts from her bank. She promptly contacted the national Cybercrime Helpline (1930) and later filed a formal complaint with the Belagavi District Cyber Police on April 4.
Police have registered a case and launched a comprehensive investigation to trace the perpetrators and track the diverted funds. The technical analysis of the malicious APK file is underway to understand its full capabilities and origin.
Rising Cyberfraud Concerns in the Region
This incident underscores the alarming increase in cyberfraud cases across the region, particularly those involving malicious APK files disguised as legitimate documents or invitations. Cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting trust and curiosity to deploy harmful software.
Police authorities have issued urgent advisories to citizens, emphasizing the importance of:
- Avoiding downloads of files or applications from unknown or unverified sources
- Exercising extreme caution when handling unsolicited digital content
- Verifying the authenticity of unexpected messages or attachments
- Regularly updating device security software
This case serves as a critical reminder of the sophisticated tactics employed by cybercriminals and the need for heightened digital awareness among all smartphone users.
