Bengaluru Teacher Falls Victim to Elaborate Cybercrime and Blackmail Scheme
In a distressing case from Bengaluru, a 40-year-old teacher was systematically deceived and blackmailed by a man who impersonated her former classmate on popular messaging applications. The elaborate scam, which spanned over a year, concluded with a dramatic confrontation at a police station where the accused inflicted self-harm using a razor blade.
The Deceptive Friendship and Financial Exploitation
The victim, identified as Aadhya (name changed for privacy), resides in Electronics City and filed an official complaint with local authorities on Wednesday. According to police reports, the accused, Arshad (37), hails from Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh and initiated contact via WhatsApp approximately one year ago. He falsely presented himself as Niraj Kumar, a former classmate of the complainant.
Over the subsequent three months, Arshad meticulously cultivated trust with Aadhya. He claimed to be from Tirupati and offered to arrange special darshan services at the renowned temple for devotees. Capitalizing on this fabricated connection, Aadhya transferred funds to him for booking temple visits for her family members and close friends.
A senior police officer disclosed that Arshad made frequent trips to Bengaluru, meeting the complainant on multiple occasions during this period. The accused later alleged he was battling cancer and urgently required financial assistance for medical treatment. Emotionally manipulated, Aadhya transferred nearly Rs 50,000 to support his purported health crisis.
Escalation to Sexual Blackmail and Extortion
Exploiting her emotional vulnerability, Arshad then made a shocking and inappropriate demand. He requested that Aadhya share a nude video with him, asserting it was his final wish before his supposed impending death. After she complied, he immediately began blackmailing her, threatening to distribute the compromising video to her family, friends, and professional contacts unless she provided additional monetary payments.
The blackmail intensified as Arshad also demanded sexual favors from the terrified teacher. Fearing social ruin and personal humiliation, Aadhya continued making online payments while desperately pleading with him to delete the illicit video. However, the accused persisted in his extortion tactics, refusing to relinquish the digital material.
Confrontation and Dramatic Police Station Incident
Determined to end the prolonged harassment, Aadhya confided in trusted acquaintances about the situation. She devised a plan to meet Arshad on April 8, ostensibly to fulfill his financial demands. Accompanied by her supporters, she confronted him and attempted to force him to delete the video permanently.
When Arshad refused to cooperate, the group escorted him directly to the Electronics City police station. At the station, the accused implored Aadhya not to file an official complaint, as he knew she wished to keep their association hidden from her family. Despite his appeals, she proceeded with the formal complaint.
As Aadhya was documenting her statement, Arshad—who had arrived carrying a bag containing personal items including a shaving kit—reportedly used a razor blade to inflict injuries on his hands and private parts. Police officers swiftly intervened, providing first aid before rushing him to a nearby private hospital for emergency medical treatment. Authorities confirmed he has since recovered and is no longer in critical condition.
Investigation Reveals Premeditated Stalking
During the subsequent investigation, police uncovered a disturbing prelude to the crime. Aadhya had previously sold her old mobile phone. Arshad, during one of his visits to Bengaluru, purchased the exact same device. He installed the Telegram messaging application and managed to recover Aadhya's account from the phone.
By accessing her messages and contact information, he obtained her phone number and initiated communication under the guise of her classmate. Even after discovering his true identity, Aadhya maintained the friendship and continued meeting him on several occasions, which further enabled his manipulative scheme.
Legal Charges and Accused Background
Law enforcement has registered a formal case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 308: Extortion
- Section 74: Assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty
- Section 75: Sexual harassment
Investigators revealed that Arshad is an engineering graduate who is currently unemployed and legally separated from his wife. A formal notice has been issued, requiring him to appear before the investigating officer for further questioning as the probe continues.
This case highlights the growing dangers of cybercrime and emotional manipulation through digital platforms, urging citizens to exercise extreme caution when interacting with unfamiliar contacts online.
