Kolkata Police Launches 24x7 Cybercrime Helpline

Kolkata Police Intensifies Fight Against Cyber Fraud with New Initiatives

In response to a surge in cybercrime, Kolkata Police has launched a comprehensive strategy to protect citizens from online fraud. With an average of 1,000 cyber fraud cases reported monthly, amounting to a staggering Rs 208 crore, the cyber cell at Lalbazar has introduced a new 24x7 helpline number: 1800 345 0066. This helpline is staffed by dedicated cybercrime officers working in three shifts, ensuring round-the-clock assistance for victims.

Bridging the Gap Between Victims and Authorities

The newly established helpline serves as a critical bridge, connecting victims with local police and the divisional cyber cell. Officers will guide individuals through the process of lodging complaints on the national portal 1930, provide instructions on blocking bank accounts, and assist in filing FIRs. Importantly, the older anti-bank fraud helpline will remain operational, offering continued support to those in need.

Specialised Cyber Blocking Cell and Educational Outreach

Beyond the helpline, Kolkata Police is setting up a specialised cyber blocking cell. This unit will proactively block SIM cards, social media handles, websites, and other online platforms identified as tools for fraudulent activities. To further empower vulnerable groups, the police will publish a monthly newsletter titled Cyber Pass. Designed with simple language, this newsletter will educate senior citizens, homemakers, and students about the latest fraud tactics and prevention measures.

Leadership Insights on Digital Security

Commissioner Supratim Sarkar emphasized the urgency of digital security, stating, "Over the last few years, Kolkata has witnessed a significant rise in cybercrimes. Just as security on roads or at home is essential, digital security is now a critical need. Cyber criminals operate invisibly and across geographical boundaries, making rapid response vital. Our 24x7 system will liaise with victims, banks, and organizations to ensure quicker resolutions. In the past year, we have successfully returned over 25% of lost funds to victims."

Targeting Vulnerable Groups Ahead of Safer Internet Day

Deputy Commissioner (Cyber) Abhishek Modi highlighted that these announcements, made just before Safer Internet Day on February 11, specifically aim to protect senior citizens, who are among the most vulnerable. The new helpline has already shown promising results, receiving more than 50 calls on its first day, with several cases promptly resolved. This initiative underscores Kolkata Police's commitment to creating a safer digital environment for all residents.
