Cyber Police Nab Rajasthan Man in Rs 40 Lakh Occultist Scam Targeting Chandigarh Woman
In a significant crackdown on digital fraud, the Cyber Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly duping a woman of approximately Rs 40 lakh by masquerading as an occultist. The accused, identified as Rohit Bhargav, a resident of Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, was taken into custody following a detailed investigation into the elaborate scam.
Exploiting Vulnerability Through Social Media
According to police reports, the victim, a resident of Chandigarh, was experiencing considerable stress due to ongoing family problems. Her vulnerable mental state made her a target for the accused, who contacted her through social media advertisements promoting occult services. Bhargav, along with an accomplice, gradually built her confidence by pretending to perform rituals aimed at eliminating her troubles.
The scam involved creating fear through claims of supernatural threats, with the accused assuring relief only upon payment. This psychological manipulation led the victim to comply with their demands over an extended period.
Financial Extortion Over Months
The fraudulent activities spanned from February 2024 to May 2025, during which the victim was repeatedly induced to transfer money to various bank accounts. In addition to online transactions, the accused also confiscated about 150 grams of gold jewellery from her. The total financial loss, combining cash transfers and the value of the jewellery, amounted to roughly Rs 40 lakh, highlighting the severe impact of the scam.
Police emphasized that the accused took full advantage of the victim's distressed condition, using it to extract substantial sums through deceptive means.
Investigation and Arrest Details
During the investigation, authorities gathered crucial evidence, including:
- Call records detailing communications between the accused and the victim.
- Customer application forms and bank documents tracing the money trail.
- Testimonies and digital footprints from social media platforms.
Based on this evidence, the Cyber Police conducted a targeted raid in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, leading to the arrest of Rohit Bhargav. The operation underscores the growing efforts by law enforcement to combat online fraud, especially schemes that prey on emotional vulnerabilities.
